pH sensors are vital for regulating microbial ecosystems in activated sludge, as pH directly impacts sludge settling and treatment efficiency. pH value not only directly affects the type and quantity of activated sludge microorganisms in the treatment process, their life activities, metabolic methods, types and surface characteristics of metabolites, but also is one of the main elements that determine the sludge microbial ecosystem. The sedimentation characteristics of sludge are closely related to the sedimentation process.
When the pH value of the mixed solution is lower than 6.5, it is favorable for the growth of fungi in the activated sludge, while the growth of bacterial micelles (flocculent bacteria) is restricted. When the pH value drops below 4.5, fungi will completely dominate, most of the protozoa in the activated sludge will disappear, and the activities of most microorganisms will be inhibited, which will seriously affect the activated sludge sedimentation and separation and effluent quality (ie fungal type). expansion). When the pH value is greater than 9, the metabolic rate of microorganisms will be greatly adversely affected, the bacterial micelles will disintegrate, and sludge bulking will occur.

The activated sludge mixture itself has a certain buffering effect on the change of pH value, because the metabolic activity of aerobic microorganisms can change the pH value of its active environment. For example, the utilization of nitrogen-containing compounds by aerobic microorganisms will reduce the acid due to denitrification, and the decarboxylation will produce basic amines and increase the pH value. Therefore, after a long period of domestication, the activated sludge method can also treat sewage with a certain degree of acidity or alkalinity. In addition, the alkalinity of wastewater itself has a certain inhibitory effect on the decrease of pH value. However, when the pH value of the sewage changes suddenly, for example, when the alkaline sewage enters the activated sludge system that has been adapted to the acidic environment, it will have an impact on the microorganisms and may even destroy the normal operation of the entire system.
