What is TDS and how to measure it?

Overview

Total dissolved solids(TDS) refers to the total weight of solids(cations, anions and unseparated dissolved substances) in one liter of water(mg/L). This parameter is commonly used for water analysis in different areas, such as in the pulp and paper industry, cooling towers, industrial boilers and environmental testing.

The traditional method for determining TDS is gravimetric. Under strict laboratory conditions, a defined amount of sample is evaporated until dry, and the residual is weighed. This is usually the best method, but it is very time-consuming. In actual measurements, we usually use a conductivity analyzer to help determine TDS. The conductivity reading can be converted to TDS by multiplying the TDS factor. But to obtain reliable results, two aspects must be considered:

1. Conductivity is only produced when solids that produce ions are dissolved in water. Solids that do not produce ions do not affect conductivity, but they will affect the true TDS value of the solution.

2. Solids of the same weight with different ions are result in different conductivity values.
Therefore, reliable TDS measurements can only be made with a conductivity analyzer when the majority of dissolved solids are ions. This applies to both natural and treated water. Moreover, even slight changes in the composition of the sample can yield accurate TDS measurements.
