What does temperature compensation of a pH sensor mean?

2023,06,02

Overview

A PH Sensor, also known as a pH meter, is used to measure the pH of a liquid. When discussing pH sensors, temperature compensation is often mentioned. But what does temperature compensation mean?

What is Temperature Compensation?

The function of temperature compensation is mainly to correct the deviation caused by the difference between the temperature of the standard buffer solution (generally 25°C) used during calibration and the actual temperature of the sample solution.

How Does Temperature Compensation Work?

The method of measuring pH with a pH sensor is based on the principle of the Nernst equation. The electromotive force of the electrode is linearly related to the pH value. Typically, two buffer solutions with different pH values are used for calibration in the pH meter to determine the slope of the curve. This slope is proportional to temperature.

For a strong electrolyte solution, when the solution temperature changes, the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution remains approximately constant. This means that when the pH value of the solution remains constant, according to the Nernst equation, the ?E of the solution will change linearly with the temperature T. As the temperature rises, the electromotive force of the solution will increase. The pH meter converts the pH value based on the monitored electromotive force of the solution, so temperature compensation must be performed to offset the influence of temperature on the measurement results.

Automatic vs. Manual Temperature Compensation

Many modern pH meters have an automatic temperature compensation function. When using automatic temperature compensation, the instrument converts the conversion coefficient obtained by the electrode at the calibration temperature to the conversion coefficient at the actual temperature according to the Nernst formula, thereby obtaining the pH value at the actual temperature.

Instruments without automatic temperature compensation require manual temperature compensation. This operation is feasible when the accuracy requirement is not high.

Our pH sensors can be selected with or without a temperature sensor, and the matching pH ORP Controller can be chosen for automatic or manual temperature compensation.
