What is the impact of the pH value of tap water on users?

2024,02,27

Overview

The water supply(tap water) in the city mainly draws from rivers, lakes, groundwater, and surface water through the water intake pumping stations of the waterworks. The waterworks are processed by the waterworks in accordance with the standard through sedimentation, disinfectant, filtration and other processes, and are finally transported to the users in various areas through the water distribution pumping stations.Nowadays, most tap water disinfection uses chlorination method. The main purpose of chlorination of public water supply is to prevent water-borne disease. This method has been promoted for more than 100 years and has relatively complete production technology and equipment. Chlorine used for tap water disinfection has the advantages of good disinfection effect, low cost, and almost no harmful substances. However, chlorine gas dissolves in water and reacts with water to form hypochlorous acid and hydrochloric acid. Hypochlorous acid plays the main role in the entire disinfection process. Although water is neutral, when chlorine is added to tap water for disinfection, the chlorine in the water will produce a small amount of hypochlorous acid, making the water slightly acidic. Usually the pH value of tap water is within the range of 6.5 to 8.5. chlorine that exceeds a certain amount will cause many harms to the human body and will have an unpleasant smell.?

In most areas, the location of the water intake points of water plants are different, so the raw water quality is also different. In order to ensure safety, water intake points with poor water quality will have higher hypochlorous acid, which means the pH value of the water will be lower, between 5.6 and 6.5. In between, it is slightly acidic. Some water plants are subject to conditional restrictions. After chlorination and disinfection, the "aeration" time of the tap water is short, so the tap water in the pipelines will have a pungent smell. Chlorine in tap water can also have adverse effects on some water equipment or containers. For example, household metal utensils, although some are made of 304 stainless steel, are only guaranteed not to rust in the air, but they are not acid-resistant. Therefore, when containing weakly acidic tap water, if they are not wiped clean after use, rust will occur. It is inevitable. In addition to containers, stainless steel stoves and cabinets should also be kept clean and dry to reduce contact with water, soy sauce and vinegar. You can wipe the surface with some soapy water or alkaline cleaning fluid.
