The scattering of light produces turbidity. Turbidity is characterized by the light scattering characteristics of particulate matter in the sample. The measurement result unit is NTU.
Turbidity refers to the degree of obstruction caused by suspended solids in water from transmitting light. Suspended matter in water is generally soil, sand, fine organic and inorganic matter, plankton, microorganisms and colloidal substances. Water turbidity is related not only to the content of suspended matter in the water, but also to their size, shape, refractive index, etc..Generally the higher the turbidity, the cloudier the solution.
How to measure the turbidity value of water quality?
Turbidity can be measured by nephelometry or scattered light method. China generally uses the turbidimetric method to measure water samples and compare turbidity standard solutions prepared with kaolin, and stipulates that one liter of distilled water contains 1 mg of silica as one turbidity unit.
In industry, the scattered light method is most widely used. A turbidity meter emits light through a section of sample and detects how much light is scattered by particles in the water from a direction 90° to the incident light. This method of measuring scattered light is called scattering. Any true turbidity must be measured this way. Turbidimeters are suitable for both field and laboratory measurements, as well as for continuous monitoring around the clock. Turbidity controllers connected online allow for control and monitoring of turbidity ranges and alarm settings.
Turbidity can be estimated by measuring the attenuation of transmitted light intensity caused by the obstruction of particulate matter in the sample using a colorimeter or spectrophotometer. However, regulatory agencies do not recognize the validity of this approach, nor does it meet the American Public Health Association's definition of turbidity.

Measurement using light transmittance is easily affected by interference such as color absorption or particle absorption. Furthermore, there is no correlation between the results measured by transmittance and scattered light measurements.
For different measurement methods or different standards used, the turbidity measurement values obtained may not be consistent. The level of turbidity generally cannot directly indicate the degree of water pollution, but an increase in turbidity caused by human and industrial sewage indicates that the water quality has deteriorated.
