So waht indicators do we need to monitor for swimming pool water?

The main indicators tested in swimming pools include: water temperature, turbidity, free chlorine, pH value, ORP value, urea, total bacteria, etc..

1. Water temperature: If the water temperature of the swimming pool is too low or too high, the human body will feel uncomfortable. It is very necessary to maintain a stable water temperature, usually between 22℃ and 26℃.

2. pH value: A high pH value of the pool water will affect the disinfection effect of chlorine and cause scaling; a low pH value will corrode the equipment and cause scaling of the pool body. The pH value should be between 7.0 and 7.8, which makes the human body feel more comfortable. If the pH is too high or too low, it can be irritating to the skin.

3. Residual chlorine: The standard content of residual chlorine is an indicator that reflects the residual disinfectant after the pool water has been disinfected with chlorine-containing disinfectants. If the residual chlorine concentration is too low, the disinfection effect will not be achieved, and bacteria and pathogenic microorganisms in the pool water will multiply excessively. If the residual chlorine concentration is too high, it will irritate the skin, respiratory tract, and internal organs of swimmers. Free residual chlorine is an important indicator to ensure the sanitation of swimming pool water quality. According to health standards, the residual chlorine content in swimming pool water should be controlled at 0.3~1mg/L, the free residual chlorine in the footbath should reach 5~10mg/L.

4. Turbidity: The turbidity index in swimming pool water is not greater than 1NTU. The clearer the water quality, the lower the turbidity. The turbidity exceeding the standard is mainly caused by the automatic water circulation not being in place, not replenishing new water in time, missing disinfectant, coagulant, etc. According to the regulations of the health supervision department, swimming pools must self-test every day and publish three data: residual chlorine, pH value and water temperature.

5. ORP value: refers to the redox potential, which represents the electromotive force of oxidation and reduction in the pool water. It is a measurement index of the oxidation or reduction capacity of the water. Its unit is mV. It has an almost 98% correlation with a disinfectant's ability to kill germs. The oxidation-reduction potential is generally required to be greater than 650mV. The world health organization believes in the chapter on water quality disinfection that"regardless of whether the chlorine content in swimming pool water is 0.3mg/L and the pH value is 7.6, or the chlorine content is 0.4mg/L and the pH value is 7.8, as long as the ORP value is above 700mV, this water quality can effectively kill E. coli." Therefore, some countries set the ORP value of pool water to not be less than 700 or 750mV.

These indicators require professional equipment to monitor. As a swimmer, how can you judge the quality of the pool's water? First, observe the water color of the swimming pool.
